Walton Planning Update
Your Walton Society Councillors monitor all planning applications that affect Walton. At Elmbridge Borough Council we fight to protect Walton from inappropriate development. Below are some current planning proposals.
· 12-16 High Street: A proposed redevelopment of the former Burton’s site would see a new building consisting of 41 serviced apartments, serviced offices and a café. It would be three storeys facing onto the High Street, going up to six storeys at the rear. The serviced apartments with hotel-like amenities would be available for stays of up to 90 days.
· Homebase site: The Walton Society shares the concerns of residents about the vacant Homebase site and the eyesore of the hoarding. Councillors initially refused an application for a 222-unit retirement village, but this was overturned on appeal in 2021. The applicants, Guild Living, have now sold the site. We are keeping a close eye for any developments and will keep you updated.
· Proposed new primary school: Surrey County Council is planning to build a new Special Educational Needs school on the land on the corner of Terrace Road and Waterside Drive, opposite the Walton Heathside. The school will have 200 places and cover primary, secondary and post-16 education. For more information, visit https://hopescourt.communityuk.site.
· Oatlands Drive: Two more developments of flats are proposed for Oatlands Drive. Elmbridge Borough Council is currently considering applications for 27 flats at 4-6 Oatlands Drive, which is on the corner by the bridge, and another for 33 flats at 16-18 Oatlands Drive.
